fairplayer: the idea

The project “fairplayer” was founded in September of 2003. The main motive for us to start this project was the issue of violence and bullying at schools and its consequences to all our everyday life. fairplayer helps to promote the ideals of fairplay and civil courage, especially among juveniles and young adults. We don’t want to focus on violence alone but transport the idea of fairplay. Our goal is to promote skills and competences in young people to interact in a more positive way and to act courageous and smart if necessary. Fairplay and civil courage must become more but simple words. We want to encourage juveniles to watch out, interfere, strengthen their weaker peers and outlaw weapons and violence – simply become a fairplayer.

What is civil courage?

Civil courage is cool – despite the fact that the word itself may sound a little old-fashioned. And what's it really about? Isn’t that crystal-clear? It’s about getting out there to help when you see somebody who needs help. It’s a fact that only looking away, ignoring and shutting up is what’s not cool. There may be a time in the future where you need help from others. That’s why fairplay also means: I watch out for others and I help them if they need me!

  • Iam not alone – we’re strong together and if I stand by others, they won’t let me down when I need them!
  • I know how to solve conflicts in a manner that leaves all parties satisfied – without violence!
  • I can turn towards others when I have a problem – I know they will help me!

A project for juveniles only?

By the way: fairplayer is NOT only devoted to juveniles and young adults - fairplayer is also relevant to parents and teachers. Because: Fairplay should concern everybody! Civil courage, talking to one another, watching each other and being present – the principle of “no keeping quiet, watch, listen and help!” is for everyone. Civil courage is about no shutting up but about helping those who need help! Probably you’re asking yourself if your child may be a victim of juvenile violence? A lot of times we don’t see the first signs that may indicate problems. Or your child may not want to “open up” to you and knows how to hide the signs. And a lot of times it’s not before the situation gets out of hand that we ask ourselves what could have been done...
